Holy Rosary Credit Union recently made a $10,000 donation to the Relay for Life, an annual awareness event and fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society.  Starting in March, HRCU employees organized bake sales, popcorn days, hot dog lunches and quilt raffles to raise money for the fundraiser.

The Relay event itself is a 24-hour walk that took place at Spaulding High School on June 21st and 22nd.  Over 20 HRCU staff members, as well as board members, volunteers and credit union members were part of the “HRCU Crusaders” Relay for Life team.  The Crusaders camped out overnight, taking turns walking around the school’s track, having at least one team member walking for each hour of the event.

“The Relay for Life is a great cause to support in our community,” said Brian Hughes, HRCU’s President & CEO.  “It was absolutely amazing to see our team not only participate the day of the event, but also spend many months in advance tirelessly fundraising.”

Including a donation from HRCU, the Crusaders raised $10,000 to go towards cancer research and those battling the disease.  The team’s fundraising tally was recognized as the third highest total at the Rochester event, which had 62 teams participating.

Kristy Methot, Assistant Vice President of Financial Services and co-captain of the HRCU Crusaders, is already looking ahead to 2015.

“We can’t wait to participate in the event again next year,” said Methot.  “With a year under our belt and more advanced planning, we should be able to exceed our $10,000 donation.”

The Relay for Life takes place annually in more than 5,200 communities in 20 countries as a celebration for the more than 14 million cancer survivors worldwide.  In 2014 alone, the numerous Relay for Life events raised more than $25 million for the Cancer Council of the American Cancer Society to be used for cancer research, prevention and support.

“Cancer is something that affects all of our lives in one way or another,” said Leanne Walters, a Financial Service Associate at the credit union’s Rochester branch and co-captain of the HRCU Crusaders.  “The Relay for Life is a great way to make a difference in the fight against cancer.”
