September 26, 2014
Studley’s Flower Gardens announced they will break new ground this week in a major reconstruction of their retail space at 82 Wakefield Street in Rochester. The project marks the first significant renovation to the structure in nearly three decades.

The planned renovations will address an aging building and make additional storefront improvements; including moving the retail entrance to a more visible location and a complete redesign of the retail space, as well as the addition of two accessible bathrooms. JSN Associates has been selected for design of the building and Whitcher Builders of Strafford, NH has been selected for the project construction. Demolition is now complete and re-construction is slated to begin the week of September 8, 2014.

As a downtown business within a historic district, the renovation project qualifies Studley’s for tax relief under the authority of NHRSA 79-E, the Community Revitalization Tax Relief Incentive, a state law adopted by the City of Rochester, which encourages the redevelopment of properties if it is declared to be a public benefit to enhance downtowns and town centers with respect to economic activity, cultural and historic character, sense of community, and in-town residential uses that contribute to economic and social vitality.
Rochester’s Economic Development Manager, Karen Pollard, stated, “Studley’s Flower Garden is the first business to undertake a substantial rehabilitation, making them eligible for the Community Revitalization Tax Relief Program (RSA 79e) in the downtown Historic District.  This program was adopted by the City of Rochester in 2008 to encourage private investment in downtown structures, and includes Gonic and East Rochester as well. After City Council approval, the property will receive short-term property tax relief using the base formula included in the statute. This private investment will contribute to economic and social vitality and preserve our community’s cultural and historic character in the Historic District.”

Studley’s Flower Garden and its current owners, David and Jeffrey Meulenbroek and manager Molly Meulenbroek, are renowned for community mindedness. David is president of the board of Rochester Main Street, Jeffrey is the president of the NH Plant Growers Association and Molly chairs the Rochester Historic District Commission. The NH District Office of the Small Business Administration named Studley's Flower Garden the Family Owned Business of the Year for 2014.

The Studley’s renovation project is targeted for completion in late November, 2014. Plans to reveal the new space with a December grand-reopening and open house are underway.
