Holy Rosary Credit Union launched the first leg of their Christmas Caring Campaign this week by making donations totaling $5,000 to the Barrington Community Food Pantry, The Community Food Pantry (Somersworth), End 68 Hours of Hunger – Rochester, and Rochester Youth Reach.

“One of our core missions here at HRCU is to give back to our friends and neighbors who day in and day out extend a helping hand to those in need in our community,” said Brian Hughes, President & CEO of HRCU.  “On behalf of our members, staff and volunteers, we are pleased to be able to help so many organizations, especially at this time of year.”

HRCU’s Christmas Caring Campaign, which runs through the month of December, will recognize more than fifteen local non-profit organizations with a total of $20,000 in charitable giving.

For many of the non-profits, the donations are coming just in time.  The number of people in need of assistance always increases during the winter months, especially around the busy holiday season.

“When the weather turns cold, heating costs go up and some people have to decide between staying warm and eating,” said Patricia Vachon, Director of The Community Food Pantry which feeds over 300 families a month throughout Somersworth, Rollinsford and Berwick.

Meanwhile, the Barrington Community Food Pantry is busy preparing over 120 Christmas baskets that will provide needy residents with necessary food items for the holidays.  “On Thanksgiving, the Food Pantry provided assistance to 92 families,” said Katie Perry, Administrative Assistant at the Barrington Police Department, who helps manage the pantry along with numerous volunteers.  “Christmas adds an additional challenge as we not only provide food for families, but we also make sure every child leaves with a toy as well, so every donation helps.”

End 68 Hours of Hunger – Rochester, and Rochester Youth Reach are both focused on keeping our area at-risk youth fed, healthy and warm this winter.  End 68 Hours of Hunger provides 88 Lilac City students with nutritious food items so they don’t go hungry on weekends.  Youth Reach works with numerous local agencies to provide warm clothing, bedding and hygiene products to Rochester students who experience housing insecurity and homelessness.

“We cannot thank these four non-profits enough for continually caring for the children and families in our neighborhoods who really need assistance,” added Hughes. “They play such a key role in providing the basic necessities to so many, and we truly appreciate the impact they make in our community.”
