SOS Recovery Community Organization (SOS RCO), together with First Church Congregational, will host John Broderick, Senior Director of Public Affairs at Dartmouth Hitchcock and former NH Chief Justice on Monday, November 12th at 7 p.m. at the First Church Congregational, 63 S. Main St. in Rochester. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Sanctuary at the Church.
Broderick, who will share his family’s journey in navigating a near death experience, mental illness, addiction, resilience and hope, is involved with Dartmouth Hitchcock’s R.E.A.C.T. mental health awareness campaign, which provides individuals with tips on how to recognize signs of emotional suffering and how to seek support for themselves and others.
R.E.A.C.T. supplements the “5 Signs” campaign developed by Change Direction, which is based on the premise that, like knowing the 5 signs of a heart attack or stroke, we should all know the 5 Signs of emotional distress; R.E.A.C.T. helps take action.
Broderick became involved with the campaign because of an incident in 2002 when his then 32 year old son violently assaulted him. Broderick was hospitalized, required reconstructive surgery and spent several months recovering His son spent three years in prison.
While the two have long since reconciled, Broderick is dedicated to addressing the root cause of his son’s violent outburst: an undiagnosed mental health disorder gone undiagnosed and untreated for likely two decades. The core of Broderick’s message is that when mental illness remains stigmatized and in the shadows, it goes unaddressed.
